The Story Behind Teotepec

The Story Behind Teotepec

A coffee roaster's goal is to tell the story of the coffee, and thus farmers, as best as possible. Here's a look into Teotepec.

We named our second coffee after the town from which it originates. It comes from Teotepec in Guerrero, Mexico and is grown by an association called HERBARADA. HERBARADA is a coffee growing collective--112 small farms (average just under 5 acres) made up of men and women working together to support their community. The association was founded just ten years ago and since the farmers have looked for ways improve their livelihoods given the inherent challenges small scale farming presents. The association provides its members with technical assistance, training, and access to markets. It also helps to promote fair trade and organic coffee production.

HERBARADA has been successful in improving the lives of its members. The farmers have been able to increase their yields and improve the quality of their coffee. They have also been able to get a better price for their coffee. Further, it's a model for other coffee growing associations in Mexico. It shows that small farmers can work together to improve their livelihoods and produce high-quality coffee.

We're proud to be working with the amazing farmers of HERBARADA. They produce delicious, high quality coffee. It's our hope we're doing them justice by telling their story here and in each bag of Teotepec we sell.
